Memorial Day is a day to remember and honor those who have died in active military service. This day was originally known as Decoration Day and was first observed in 1868 to commemorate the soldiers who had died in the Civil War. It was officially declared a national holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is a time of remembrance and gratitude for the ultimate sacrifices made by those who have served and protected our nation. It is also a time to reflect on the values of courage, freedom, and justice that they exemplified.

Congratulations to the graduates of the 2023 Leadership Monroe Class. The graduates were honored at a dinner held at the Monroe Golf & Country Club on Thursday where each graduate briefly shared their experiences as they were given a certificate of achievement along with an embossed award.

Career Expo 2023 helps students prepare for future
|
Offering local high school students a wide variety of possible career options after graduation was the goal of Monroe County Career Expo 2023 at the First Merchants Bank Expo Center at the Monroe County Fairgrounds.
Monroe County Career and Technical Education Director Denise Teague and Matt Vanisacker, former vice president of business development for the BDC, developed the expo in April 2019.
“This is a countywide opportunity for businesses in our county to interact with all nine school districts,” Teague said. “This is the only event where that happens. Otherwise, you have a district that has a career fair but it’s isolated to that district.
The annual event was made possible through a partnership with the Monroe County Intermediate School District and the Monroe County Business Alliance (formerly the Monroe County Business Development Corp).
Approximately 200 students arrived on buses to attend the event scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The expo was paid for by 60 participating area agencies, and lunch was provided. Sponsorship opportunities ranged from the platinum level at $1,000 or more to the copper level at $100.
“One hundred percent of the cost of the event, including transportation, was paid for by our sponsors,” she said. “All of the businesses that attended donated. They are our sponsors," Teague said. "We raise money every year and reimburse the district for the costs. We provide lunch, T-shirts and other prizes. We had about 60 businesses this year.”
Along with meeting prospective employers, students were provided information on interview tips and resume writing.

The Office of Rural Development Rural Readiness Grant Program (RRGP) provides rural communities (via tax-exempt organizations) with up to $50,000 to support collaborative planning and capacity initiatives. These competitive, reimbursement grants support and invest in underserved areas and populations by providing reimbursement grant funding for capacity building activities, development readiness initiatives, partnership and plan formation, and cross sector collaboration. The Economic Growth Institute (EGI) at the University of Michigan has recently launched the Advanced Mobility Supply Chain Transformation Center (STC) to assist small to medium size manufacturers in the greater Detroit region transform as EVs, autonomous vehicles, and advanced manufacturing shape the future of mobility. The STC will assess manufacturers' business needs, such as manufacturing processes, workforce/training, succession planning, engineering and product development capacity, sales, etc.
The STC program helps fund projects to address each company's unique business needs. Grant matching funds are available and companies that qualify can receive up to $100,000 in federal grant funds towards projects.
