Walk a Mile - Mentoring for Success

The MDOC Walk a Mile returning citizen mentoring program has launched in Monroe County and will eventually expand state-wide. The goal of the program is to help returning citizens navigate back to society, stay on the right track, and achieve success. Participation in the mentoring program is 100% voluntary for both MDOC client Mentees and for Mentors. Mentors will consist of both peers (those with shared experience of incarceration and reentry) and non-peers from all walks of life. Mentor training is administered via online modules, is self-paced, and includes topics such as boundary setting, avoiding manipulation, Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care, communication skills, etc. We have procured award winning mentoring software (MentorcliQ) that will build a profile for both Mentors and Mentees with customized criteria. It also contains an algorithm that will recommend Mentor/Mentee matches based upon the individual profiles and a short personality assessment. Mentors will have the opportunity to provide exclusion criteria (e.g., they may opt to not be matched with a Mentee who is a sex offender, who has a history of SUD, etc.). Successful mentoring relationships are predicated upon two key factors – trust and confidentiality. To that end, what is discussed between Mentors and Mentees (clients) will be considered largely confidential. The main objectives of the mentoring program are to reduce recidivism, abscond rates, technical violations, and drug/alcohol use and/or relapse. Secondary goals include increasing Mentees’ overall optimism, outlook on life, and confidence in completing their parole program. We are partnering with MSU, who will conduct an independent program evaluation. There is overwhelming evidence proving the benefits of mentoring in education, for professional development, for youths, and for juvenile offenders. We anticipate similar benefits for our returning citizen clients, and we hope to inspire other states to follow our lead.

In the News

Work continues in earnest on developing economic development strategies for Link Plan 2.0. In July, OHM Consultants led a robust discussion on Housing, which is one of the key focus areas of Link Plan 2.0.  The discussion centered on opportunities to align PDAs (Priority Development Areas) with Quality-of-Life Amenities (residential housing & non-motorized transportation, as an example). The Prepare for Investment Pillar Team, in Link Plan 1.0, focused only on commercial/industrial development. The new approach will result in more comprehensive and inclusive strategies for economic development within the County.

The Pillar Teams did not meet in July but will meet virtually during August to review the draft of the Mission & Vision Statements and the Action Items that were developed during the Stakeholder and All Pillar Team Meeting that was held in June.

It’s not too late! If you are interested in participating on a Pillar Team, you may contact me at fbuchanan@customerexp360.com or at 419-654-1934.

The Four Pillar Teams are:

Prepare for Investment - Commercial, Industrial, Residential    Development

Talent Development - Career Technical Education,

Post-secondary, Adult-learners

Launch 734 - Entrepreneurship, Business Development

Michigan’s Cornerstone - Quality-of-Life, Residential Housing,

and Image & Brand
